Tips for Hiring a Painting Contractor

Get at least three estimates.
To make comparing easier, with each painter, make sure you receive quotes for the same work.

Get at least three references.
While this can seem like a time-consuming step, it can make the difference between have the job done correctly or months of headaches. Don’t forget, the bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of low cost is forgotten.

Ask to see the contractors State License, Business License & Certificate of Insurance Worker Comp.
It is important to hire an insured painter so you are not held responsible for any injuries to the painter or crew member while they are on your property.

Written contracts are a must!
Insist on a written contract that specifies the project’s scope of work. This should include details on surface preparation, and how surfaces will be painted, the exact paint products to be applied, a time schedule, and payment terms.

Payment
Don’t pay cash. Also, don’t pay more than 10% or $1,000 (whichever is less) as a deposit. Keep all payment records / receipts. Only make your final payment once you are completely satisfied with the job.

Contractor licensing laws.
Contractor licensing laws and regulations vary in each state. Check the CA government website for more information on laws and to check the painter’s license number. www.cslb.ca.gov

As with most hiring processes, pay attention to each painter’s presentation. Are they polite, professional and dressed appropriately? Presentations will most likely reflect the type of work they do.
